Cole Valey's proximity to Haight Ashbury somehow hasn't swayed its relaxed, family-oriented and slightly upscale vibe. It's probably one of the loveliest neighborhoods in San Francisco, housing families, young professionals and small mom-and-pop businesses. Head to Cole Street (and a portion of Carl Street) to explore the large and tasty selection of restaurants, coffee shops and cafes. You'll see them packed with locals during weekend brunch, specifically the locals' favorite: Zazie.
Don't stick to Cole Street exclusively, though or you'll miss out on some of the other great attractions Cole Valley has to offer. Walk up Shrader Street to 600-foot-high Tank Hill for some of the best views of the city. And if you're into architecture, check out the house at the corner of Shrader and Rivoli Streets: it was designed by Ira Kurlander in 1908, and was also the home of former California governor Jerry Brown.
